In this concert Il Giardino Armonico tell the story of Christ’s Passion from the point of view of the Virgin Mary. Given the context, Monteverdi’s Pianto della Madonna could naturally not be omitted. This spiritual reworking of Monteverdi’s famous Lamento d’Arianna is given an 18th century echo in Ferrandini’s Pianto di Maria. That this poignant cantata was wrongly attributed to Handel for a long time is probably the best compliment it could possibly be given. Ferrandini’s pen gives the Virgin Mary’s lament unparalleled depth. Il Giardino Armonico are also performing instrumental music that fits in seamlessly with the Passion. Vivaldi’s Sonata and Sinfonia ‘Al Santo Sepolcro’, for instance, which are both brimming with poignant chromaticism and are exceptions to his otherwise exuberant oeuvre. This latter also applies to some degree to this whole contemplative concert, which reveals an unexpected introvert side to Giovanni Antonini and his flamboyant ensemble.
